University College London Hospitals and The Pelican Cancer Foundation are pleased to announce the 1st UK Symposium on ‘Focal Therapy in Prostate Cancer’ taking place on Tuesday 24th June 2008. This symposium takes place during the BAUS meeting in Manchester 24-26 June 2008. (BAUS is the annual meeting of the British Association of Urological Surgeons).
This event is organised by Hashim Uddin Ahmed (MRC Research Fellow and SpR Urology, UCL/UCH) and Mark Emberton (Reader in Interventional Oncology and Consultant Urological Surgeon UCL/UCH).
The subject of the meeting is;
“The choice for men with localised prostate cancer lies between active surveillance and radical therapy. Radical therapy carries significant complications (incontinence, impotence, rectal). Equally, active surveillance carries psychological burden and follow-up healthcare burdens. The concept of Focal Therapy involves treating only the areas of cancer within the patient – by doing so, it is hypothesised that the morbidity of treatment is reduced, whilst the cancer is treated”.
This 1st Symposium in Focal Therapy in Prostate Cancer will include experts in this field who will discuss the rationale for focal treatment and the obstacles that need to be overcome to demonstrate that it could represent an important paradigm shift in managing prostate cancer. The talks will be followed by a panel discussion. The panel will include a number of consultant urological surgeons involved in prostate cancer treatment using a range of energy sources.
