A leading specialist has warned there is a ‘very
high incidence’ of prostate cancer in Dorset.
Naveed Afzal, Consultant Urologist at Dorset County
Hospital, Dorchester, was speaking before a charity
run to raise money for research into the disease
and for its treatment at the hospital’s urology
department.
Mr Afzal said one of the reasons was the increasingly
high proportion of elderly men in the county. Another
was the good supply of locally reared meat in the
area. He said, “Although this is overall
a good thing it does mean many people have a high
proportion of red meat in their diet and this can
be a factor in causing cancer. I encourage patients
to eat more fruit and vegetables, particularly
the green variety. This definitely helps”.
He also said men over 50 should to go to their
GP’s for a PSA test so that the cancer can
be diagnosed and treated in its early stage.
