HIFU - Are treatments available on the NHS?

It is possible to get a HIFU treatment on the NHS, though it is not available in all parts of the UK. For some men, obtaining an NHS HIFU treatment will mean travelling long distances to NHS hospitals in other towns or cities from where they live. Most importantly, men have to be certain that prostate HIFU treatment is a sensible and appropriate choice for their particular situation, and feel confident that they have reached a fully informed decision in consultation with their medical advisers.

For some men, this process will be very simple and they will live near to a hospital with a Urology surgeon who offers a prostate HIFU service, and they will be treated near to home. Other men will need to discuss their wish for prostate HIFU with their current Urology Surgeon or Radiation Oncologist, and ask to be referred to one of the hospitals offering the HIFU treatment service on the NHS. In most cases, this request for a second opinion is welcomed by their current doctor, though very occasionally; it might be necessary for the man to go back to a GP and ask to be referred for a second opinion..
